Why do I need to buy a different modem?

A broadband modem or wireless router is designed for use with high-speed broadband. Although you probably already have a standard 28K or 56k modem, these are not suitable for use with any kind of ADSL service as they cannot support the high data speeds involved. Broadband modems and wireless routers are easy to install and is even easier if you buy the Virgin Media Broadband Starter Kit or Wireless Kit. We recommend that you keep your old 28K or 56K modem as you may need it in the future to access the Broadband backup service.

What are filters and why do I need them?

ADSL micro-filters, known as filters or splitters, are small adaptors you need to plug into each of your phone sockets (but only once we’ve activated your line). They make sure that the data signals are kept separate from the voice signals – so you can use your voice line at the same time as you receive high-speed Internet access.  For more information on using these see our Equipment shop.

What if I already have an broadband modem, wireless router and filters?

For most customers, this is highly unlikely, unless you have previously subscribed to a different ADSL service. If this is the case, please check to see that your equipment meets the required specifications - you should check with your manufacturer that the product is suitable for use with ADSL. You will then be able to use Virgin Media Broadband without purchasing the recommended Starter Kit – however, you should note that we cannot provide support on the installation of other types of modem.

How long will it take for my Virgin Media Broadband Starter Kit or Wireless Kit to arrive?

Once you have placed your order with the Broadband shop, the Virgin Media Broadband Starter Kit is normally despatched within 48 hours of receiving confirmation of your Virgin Media Broadband order acceptance from Virgin Media. You will be given an order reference number. Do not lose this number as you will need it to track the progress of your order.
