So, what do I do if I have been spammed?

If you are unlucky enough to receive a spam, do NOT use the "unsubscribe" or "remove" links/instructions that may be included in the email. By attempting to unsubscribe yourself, you are only confirming your email address to the spammers. That said, if the email is not technically spam (i.e. it was sent to a mailing list which you may have signed up for) then using the unsubscribe link *should* be ok.

Spammers register disposable accounts from which they can spam. The ISP to which the account is registered has the ability to close that account if they receive complaints about spam originating from it. Whether this happens is down to the network administrators at that ISP, but at Virgin Media, we take network abuse seriously and will act on any accounts who break the Terms and Conditions.

That said, you have three options as to what to do: Report the SPAM to us.
By doing this, you are making your ISP aware that you have received a spam mail with the purpose of having us trace and report this to the relevant ISP. Most ISPs should do this for you. We at Virgin Media do this . If the SPAM originated from someone on our network, we will trace the account used and take action where appropriate, whether this be sending the customer a warning email through to terminating their account.

Report SPAM to the originating ISP.
By tracing the header yourself you can identify the originating domain and make your complaint to them. This will enable them to trace the account used and take action where appropriate. We receive complaints of this type and will again take action where appropriate.

Change your email address.
This may seem very drastic, but in cases where huge amounts of SPAM are received and your email address is very obviously known, then the only way to stop the SPAM is to change your email address and never disclose the new address.

In reporting both cases, you will need to include the full headers of the mail you've received so that the investigators can trace/have the evidence to convict the offender.
