Delays - You See Colours review

A band's second album is always the one to watch, especially if the debut was half decent. While it would be pushing the boat out a tad far to claim that Delays are "the future of British rock", as has been boldly mentioned elsewhere, there is no doubt the Southampton combo has come on in leaps and bounds from Faded Seaside Glamour, their debut of two years ago.

Teaming up once more with long-time producer Graham Sutton, the band has flexed its creative muscles to considerable effect. You See Colours has a more cohesive feel than its predecessor and when they rock, they do so with a certain measured style. The upcoming single, Valentine, is mini-epic in proportions and likely to be an instant classic and Sink Like A Stone has more than a suggestion of the Sixties about it, as in fact do a number of the tunes on offer here.

The only caveat to this being a potentially really good album, an album it has to be said that adds to the listener's interest with every play, is Greg Gilbert's vocal style. It is a double-edged sword of possibilities; it's possible he has the voice of an angel, or it's possible that it's anything but angelic. I'm sitting on the fence on this one.
